Spillman claims 1st Annual "Freedom 40"
It was a story for the ages, as Lunbeck Speedway kicked off a new annual tradition with the first ever running of the Freedom 40 in celebration of the LKA's new website and message board. A strong field of 14 karts signed in led by five Outlaws banned from OVDTR. One of the largest crowds in Lunbeck history was also on hand to witness a record night.
Right from the beginning, things were off to a wild start. For the first time ever the LKA had a 3 way tie for fast time at 7.49 seconds! Jamie Roush set the time first followed by Jon Singleton, and finally Jason Spillman. The field was divided into 3 heats of 8 laps each with the top 3 starters inverted from time trials and only the top 2 transferring to the dash.
The first heat race saw John Wayne Roush start from the pole and he did a great job in picking up a heat race win and leading the race flag to flag over Tyler Roush, Jamie Roush, Aaron Fry, and Sean Lehman. Heat #2 found Todd George back at Lunbeck and on the pole. But it was co-fast timer Jon Singleton who blasted from his 3rd starting spot up to challenge George for the lead. However, it was Uncle John Roush who put on the show. After missing time trials, Uncle Roush was forced to start dead last in the heat, but managed to work his way up to 2nd to make the transfer to the dash along with heat winner Jon Singleton. Todd George held on for 3rd, followed by Tyler Lochbaum, and Mike May.
The third and final heat found The "Lunbeck Ironman" Scott Salyers on the pole and he would lead early while "The Lunbeck Intimidator" Jason Spillman and "The Lunbeck Gentleman" Troy Uhrig put on a furious battle for 2nd with Ryan Linkous in tow. Uhrig was again making his case known for the coveted "Promoter's Choice Award"as he made contact with Salyers sending him spinning, but then Uhrig voluntarily went to the tail. It was a great gesture of sportsmanship from one of the LKA's finest. Spillman went on to claim the win with Salyers holding on for 2nd. Uhrig was able to slip past Linkous late to claim 3rd.
Next up was the dash for the 6 best from the heats. The dash was straight up from time trials putting Jon Singleton on the front row with Jason Spillman alongside. The jam packed Lunbeck Speedway was boiling over with anticipation as Spillman and Singleton have waged some great battles this season and the dash looked to be yet another battle in their season long war. Sure enough, they lived up to everyones expectations as Singleton led the race early with Spillman hounding him every inch of the way. Finally off turn 4, Spillman was able to inch inside of Singleton and as the duo entered treacherous turn 1 and 2, Singleton found himself on the high side and out of real estate off turn 2. Following a quick detour through the grass, he came back onto the track in 3rd right behind John Wayne Roush who was having a great run once again! Spillman cruised on to the win as Singleton made a great last lap diving pass on Roush to reclaim 2nd. John Wayne Roush held on for 3rd followed by John Roush, Scott Salyers, and Tyler Roush who dropped out with throttle problems.
The always exciting B-main was next on the agenda. Jamie Roush and Todd George paced the field to green. On the opening lap, George got loose on the high side and spun in turn 1 forcing the rest of the field into taking evasive action. After a quick trip to the tail for the #4B, the race was back underway with jamie Roush showing the way with Aaron Fry, Troy Uhrig, and Mike May all right on him. Fry clipped the inside berm off turn 2 sending him into the backstretch grass and leaving the door open for Troy Uhrig to slip by into 2nd. Former track flagman Mike May did a great job in only his 2nd Lunbeck race as he started last in the 8 kart field and worked his way to the fourth and final transfer spot after a spirited duel with Sean Lehman, Ryan Linkous, and Tyler Lochbaum who were all dicing it up. Jamie Roush crossed the line first followed by Uhrig, Fry, May, Lochbaum, Lehman, Linkous and Todd George who did not finish.
Finally, the starting field was set for the Freedom 40. The sun had set and one by one the 10 karts made their way onto the frontstretch under the lights. Like the fans in the Roman Coliseums, the Lunbeck faithful awaited the entrance of the LKA Gladiators for the 40 lap grind. The "4" pill was pulled inverting the top 4 dash finishers. This gave Lunbeck another historic first on the night as the first time a father/son duo started on the front row at Lunbeck. Uncle John Roush Sr and his son John Wayne Roush would be on the front row followed by Singleton and Spillman in row 2. Scott Salyers and Tyler Roush made up row 3, followed by B-Main transfers Jamie Roush, Troy Uhrig, Aaron Fry, and Mike May.
The elder statesman of the LKA, Uncle Roush took his #4 kart to the early lead. The early laps ran very clean as promoter Aaron Fry became the first casualty exiting on lap 6 with a lost chain, but managing to get off the track without causing a caution. The remaining 9 karts managed to run til lap 17 with only one caution. On lap 15, Mike May got into Scott Salyers and decided to challenge Troy Uhrig for the Promoter's Choice Award as he too voluntarily went to the tail! Promoter Aaron Fry had to be treated for shock after 2 drivers in one night decided to fess up to causing a yellow. Ah, but it was merely the calm before the storm!
A lap #18 caution came out for the #33M of Tyler "The Monster" Roush who exited the speedway, leaving 8 karts running. As the karts reached the halfway mark, the running order was: Roush Sr, Spillman, J.W. Roush, Salyers, Singleton, Uhrig, Jamie Roush, and May. A lap #22 caution came out as Jamie Roush lost his rear bumper and was black flagged. Then it got real interesting as on the restart, Spillman made his bid for the lead on Uncle Roush and the 2 tangled off turn 4. being deemed a racing incident, BOTH drivers were sent to the tail. This put Scott Salyers on the point with 13 laps remaining. Salyers was pressured hard as the the fireman, Jon Singleton was a "Fireball" of speed, pushing the 71c in the corners with troy Uhrig waiting to pounce on them both.
A rash of late race cautions saw John Roush exit the track with a broken nerf bar on lap #29, then Mike May off the track with a broken rear bumper on lap #30. The standing room only crowd was extremely disappointed when Singleton also exited the speedway on lap #31. As the laps wound down, Salyers held on to the lead, but the Lunbeck Intimidator was coming. Spillman caught the 71c Conley Trucking kart of Salyers on lap 34 and squeezed by on the backstretch. Off turn 4, Salyers turned Spillman sideways sending Spillman across the infield and back out in turn 2 where everyone continued on. Troy Uhrig also got by Salyers and may have been the fastest kart on the track late as he reeled in Spillman, but could not make the pass. Spillman took the checkers followed by Uhrig, Salyers, and John W Roush.

| I had a great time. If my bumper had not broke off I think I could have......well you know the story. That was the most fun I've had racing in a long time. My kart was hooked up. Last to 6th. caution. My fault! Again last back up to 4th. out of ten karts. It was great!!!

Definitely an intresting night, Congrats to Spillman, while I don't agree with the whole Bump N Run mentality your kart was hooked up. You almost made that pass on the outside in turn 1 and 2 not once but twice in the feature, that is better then my kart would dream of doing.
I did horrible, got outside in my heat, tried to hold it for a few laps but eventually had to get to the inside which forced me to the tail. I thought about bumping Aaron a few times but decided against it since only the top 2 transfer and it really was not going to help. B Main was rough, I moved up some but then I hit that hump in turn 1 all wrong and just about flew out of my kart and slid out into the grass in the meanwhile. I still can't bend my pinky finger from that one, went to the tail, bumped up one spot, thought about bumping the 10t then decided against it, I really did not want to race the A main anymore. Got to watch the whole A main from the sidelines.
On the whole Bump-N-Run thing, I guess that is alright in some peoples eyes, but when the bump-n-run is ripping off side panels and such it has gone a little beyond that. I remember the first race ever at Lunbeck, the Catfish ran a perfect line the whole feature, he was not the fastest kart there but he ran a line so no one could pass him. He won the race, noone expected him to make room because faster karts where behind him.
For that first year or so if you tried to Bump N run someone tempers got a little heated so eventually you stopped trying it. Now it seems like the Bump-N-run is the only way around that track anymore. I know it is a small track and there is going to be contact, that is a gimme but I was under the impression talking to other drivers at other tracks that Bump-N-Run was not okay with most kart drivers and is heavily frowned upon at most tracks. It is not my style of racing, don't get me wrong I can do it and I did do it earlier this year at Lunbeck but I was really ashamed about it after wards.
That is just my opinion on the whole thing, I will admit Spillman did a bunch of Bump-N-Runs especially late in the race but I will also give him credit for an equal number of really good passes earlier on. In order to win he did what he needed to do, would I have done the same, I hope not, it is just a backyard track we are not talking lots of money on the line here.
Also to the person who stole all my money out of my wallet there while I was on the track, I hope you at least use it at some girlie bars since there was at least 10 one dollar bills in there with the twenties. If I do find out who you are I don't know what I am gonna do to you.

Holy Crap Shawn, sorry about your wallet getting stolen!Dang thats horrible.
I started 5th and got 4th on the start thanks to being on the inside,I finally got around John Wayne on the inside coming out of 4 as he washed up and rode behind Jason and Uncle Roush and I knew they were going to tangle LOL!!
About lap 18,I think it was Mike May that ended up on my arm and it hurt a little and I got my spot back. Then 4 laps later on lap 22,Jason and Uncle get together and I pass them both on the outside and I thought the caution came out and I come back around and its still green!!So I had the lead and held it under many cautions.Troy actually passed me once coming out of 2 with very little contact and the caution saved me LOL!!Then a few laps later ,I get bumped by Jason and he almost gets me on the bottom, then coming into turn 3 he almost passed me on the outside but I held on and he finally got me with a bump and I was a little aggravated,so coming out of 4 I bumped him,he got sideways and I passed him high, but he kept going and went thru the infield!!Then he comes out on the other side 4 Karts ahead of me???What the heck I was thinking as I threw my arms up which allowed Troy to pass me LOL!!Then John Wayne got me back and then I passed him back on the last lap for my 4th top 3 in the last 5 race!!Two 2nds at wakefiled ,a win at Wakefiled and a 3rd at Lunbeck!!
Anyhow,Im not sure why Jason wasnt penalized for going thru the infield as any track in America does not allow that??Aaron said If hed done that Id had to go to the tail for spinning him, which he hit and got people sideways a lot from the people I talked too LOL??Plus he didnt stop so how could you call me for a caution??I guess I will run that line the next race and see if I can gain some spots LOL??Ive got to know Jason a little bit better as of late and hes cool. But,I guess he thought he was getting money and got a little rougher than usual LOL!!Then we didnt even get to race for the money afterwards, but its going to a future race,so Im cool with that, but we need to know we are not racing for money as I think it wouldnt have been so rough LOL!

| a little rough maybe so lol im sorry bout all the bumps and people need to realize that i was getting bumped also which is how i ran over top of roush, and the last ten laps i believe there wasnt a person on the track that didnt hit each other and rj lol like aaron said when you hit me off of turn 4 i was side ways all the way down the straight and it drove me into the infield i would never go to the infield to pass someone if i was going to dont you think i would have did it to uncle roush the only reason i was there is because your bumper put me there lol but its cool i hope and to everyone i hit im very sorry im not usually like that but i have a problem of bringin off track problems on the track and im sorry to all i guess ill try to make the top work next time lol i hope we can move on and drop this because i have fun racin with you all, sean and todd i never hit either one of you but im sorry that it ticked uns off as well lol and i hope you guys come back again wild night it will be better next time

Oh Im over it,just ranting a little bit,I was happy with my run as I thought I ran a good race! The only time I got into somebody real hard was when I got into you out of turn 4 when the infield incident happened LOL!!I was just a little upset I got bumped and lost the lead, but I still had a great time and will never miss a race at Lunbeck Even as I came off the track and people came over they thought I was upset ,but then I yell as Im getting out of my Kart!!"Damn that was some fun racing" LOL!!
I mean you have to bump there, thats a given,I just dont try and do it going in,thru and out of the corner LOL!!I talked to Uncle Roush and he said you were hitting him in every turn and in every corner ,in,out and thru!!Your a good enough racer, since youve been doing it for 19 years, that you should be a little more patient! If you did it late in the race, like you did with me its alright but every lap on Uncle Roush and then people told me when you went to the back, that you hit every Kart to get back to the front LOL!!I guess maybe after you went to the back then you probably had bump to get back up there, but just try a bump going in and get under them or coming out and get under them, thats all Im asking as thats what I try to do!!I actually got by John Wayne, when Uncle Roush and You checked up in the mdidle of turn 1 and 2 and John Wayne Slowed and I bumped him he washed out and I got him going into 3!!Its cool though and I will see you at BW3's on Saturday and we can drink a beer together
